Happy Holidays!

I hope you had an amazing Thanksgiving.  I love spending time with family, eating delicious (and healthy…..I always bring a couple of healthy options as my contribution to the meal) food AND indulging in some of my favorite foods as well.  All made with love. The best part!

Now we move into what can be a stressful season, and since reducing stress, anxiety and fatigue is my specialty, I thought I would share my favorite “go to” supplement to reduce intense stress and anxiety.

People always ask me what supplements they should be taking.  Honestly, this varies from person to person, and I always recommend working with a holistic doctor to find out what you need most

With that said, most of my clients come to me because they are stressed out.  Many are chronically stressed and stuck in “fight or flight” mode.

They are usually experiencing symptoms of anxiety, fatigue, brain fog, insomnia and sometimes even Thyroid, Adrenal and Gastrointestinal issues like Sibo or Candida.

My goal is to get my clients out of the stressed state (“fight or flight”) they are in and get them feeling calmer and more focused.

There are many benefits to getting out of “fight or flight” and into “rest and digest” including increased focus, better sleep, the ability to make more rational decisions, and even better digestion……which makes the Holidays SO much more enjoyable!

Stress is inevitable.  We have a lot going on at any given time, especially during the Holiday Season, but when you are suffering from chronic stress it can become unbearable.

I use to be there! Believe me….irritability and brain fog were my top two symptoms and I would freak out on my family for things that seemed so minor to most people.  I had a very low tolerance for stress because I had been living in a stressed state for so long.

I see this kind of stuff happening with my clients all the time.  They are stressed out and have been for so long that sometimes the stressed state has become their normal state.

The top supplement I recommend to get you out of “fight or flight” state?

Magnesium!  (keep reading and I’ll share my fave supplement brand)

It’s basically the anti-stress mineral! Without it, the nerve cells to become over-reactive which can cause us to be highly sensitive, nervous, and irritable even when we aren’t in a stressful situation.

Stress depletes the body of magnesium and low magnesium actually amplifies stress.  So it’s basically a vicious cycle….you gotta get that Mag!

To start I usually recommend increasing magnesium-rich foods like green leafy vegetables (specifically spinach and chard), Pumpkin Seeds, Almonds, Avocado, Kefir or Yogurt, and wait for it…….

Dark Chocolate!

1 single ounce of dark chocolate (80% or higher) has more magnesium than any other food….but of course, you don’t want to over-do it since it also has caffeine and sugar!!  (This is why women tend to crave chocolate if they have PMS….it’s a sign of low magnesium)

When you are in a chronically stressed state though (or you are already eating plenty of mag rich foods and still stressed), a magnesium supplement can be extra helpful in breaking that stress cycle even faster.

What I recommend is starting with a Magnesium Glycinate or Magnesium Citrate Supplement such as Natural Calm. <—-that links to it on Amazon, but you can get it at your local Health Food Store also.

I personally like this brand, because it is in a powder form and you can adjust the dose based on your needs (make sure to read the package on how to do so).

You can take it…….

…at night, before bed to relax you.

…when you are anxious about going to your in-laws house for the Holidays.

…after store hopping trying to find that perfect gift at the last minute.

…when you are stuck in traffic.

….when jumping on a long flight to visit family. (I keep packets of Natural Calm in my purse whenever I travel)

Basically, any time you are feeling stressed or anxious.

Oh yeah, you can also take it if you get constipated from eating something that you don’t normally eat. It helps ease constipation on top of calming your nerves.  Awesome!

Magnesium is the best if you get bouts of anxiety.  It will get you feeling more relaxed and at ease throughout the Holiday Season.

Get your magnesium on and relax into the joy of the season and let go of the extra anxiety.
